Coarsegold Elementary, Ranchos Middle School dominate Madera County academic pentathlon

Coarsegold Elementary School's seventh grade team and Ranchos Middle School's eighth grade team won the 2014 Madera County academic pentathlon on Saturday.

Nearly 400 students participated in the five-event competition. The first round included the math and essay tests and was held March 14. The second round included literature, speech and the super quiz Saturday.

St. Joachim School's seventh and eighth grade teams placed first in the super quiz, which consisted of four to six team members answering 15 of 30 questions. The four highest scores were added up to determine the winners.

The Coarsegold Elementary School's seventh grade team included Monique Ades, Eden Hussey, Tyler Matyshock, Emily Nowka, Hunter Palmer, Cale Sweeney and Paige Szabadi.

The Ranchos Middle School's eighth grade team included Lauren Alexander, Jazper Blancett, Madison Devine, Travin Feramisco, Jameson Frazier, Calissa Haney, Wyatt Harpain, Holly Hiatt, Greyson Hoelzel, Emily Koop, Ashley Morris, Samantha Park, Maddie Person, Aspen Poodry, Corey Pringle, Kaleb Roth, Brandon Sassano, Dane Tynan and Brooke Yang.
