Two people were killed -- one a 6-year-old girl -- and three others were injured Monday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 south of the Avenal cutoff, the California Highway Patrol said.

Late Tuesday, the CHP confirmed the identity of the dead woman as Maricela Briseno, 30, of Los Angeles. The identity of the 6-year-old girl who died has not been released.

The crash occurred just after 5 p.m. Monday.

The CHP said driver Alfredo Guzman and five others were southbound in a Honda Odyssey when the vehicle's right-rear tire blew out. The Honda spun and collided with two northbound Freightliner big rigs.

Three people, who were not wearing seat belts, were ejected by the impact. The 6-year-old was among five people taken to Community Regional Medical Center. The child died at the hospital Monday.

Julia Guzman, 7, and Maria Guzman, 53, had major injuries. Alfredo Guzman, 32, was listed with moderate injuries. Jubenal Guzman, 34, was not injured.

Eyewitness Yesenia Hernandez said the family was returning to Los Angeles from San Francisco when the crash happened.
