Home Star, Inc., a Fresno real estate brokerage, recently launched a new scholarship, the Rising Star Scholarship, to help students complete an undergraduate or graduate degree.

The $2,000 scholarship is good for any degree at an accredited public or private, two-year or four-year university in the U.S.

Students must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher and be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent U.S. resident living in Fresno or Madera counties. Students must demonstrate leadership abilities through participation in community service and extracurricular activities.

Applications will be accepted through March 31. The application includes a completed form, a cover letter, curriculum vitae, four essay questions, official transcripts and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, professor, counselor or academic adviser. Recommendations must be emailed directly to letters@risingstarscholarship.com.

Applicants may be called for a phone interview with one or more of the judges, and semifinalists will be interviewed by one or more of the panelists.

The panelists are Erick Motta, president and founder of the scholarship; Martin Curiel, co-founder of the Rising Farmworker Dream Fund; Dr. Jeannette Mancilla-Martinez, a professor at UC Irvine; and Emerson Estrada, a coordinator for the Timothy Discipleship training program at Cornerstone Church.
