Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs down to Fresno Unified School District for not communicating better with the Sikh community and not protecting Sikh students from bullying on its campuses. According to Simran Kauer, advocacy manager of the Sikh Coalition, the group reached out to at least five Fresno Unified principals to raise awareness about the Sikh culture in November, and didn't get a response. Independent researchers at a forum held in Fresno in 2012 found that 54.5% of Sikh students in Fresno County said that they had been bullied at school.

Thumbs up to A.J. Rassamni and employees at his Great American Car Wash on Blackstone Avenue. They gave about 500 new and gently used books to Pyle Elementary School after collecting them from customers in exchange for a free car wash coupon. Rassamni said that his goal is to encourage children to read.

Thumbs up to Me-n-Ed's Pizza for its donation of $20,000 each to Boys & Girls Clubs of Fresno County, Catholic Charities and Poverello House. The money was raised through the company's annual Do-Nation campaign.

Thumbs up to Assembly Member Henry T. Perea for his concerted efforts to correct problems at the state Employment Development Department. On Thursday the state auditor released a report that found EDD failed to implement a federal program that would have returned $400 million to the Unemployment Insurance Trust fund.
