A 60-year-old man committed suicide Monday night by sitting in front of an oncoming train in southeast Fresno after a fight with his girlfriend, police said.

The man and his girlfriend, who was around the same age, were fighting about 7:30 p.m. next to the railroad tracks near East Church and South Railroad avenues when the man threatened to sit on the tracks and commit suicide, Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez said.

The man suffered fatal head injuries from the Union Pacific freight train. Police performed CPR when they arrived but were not able to revive him.
