Fresno Unified teachers union looks financially strong heading into election year

Financially speaking, the Fresno Teachers Association once again appears well positioned for the November school board election.

The union reported more than $120,000 in its campaign account as of Dec. 31, the most recent campaign finance report. And it likely isn't done raising money.

At this early juncture, it's unknown how much the union will spend on the election or which trustees or candidates it will endorse -- or even who may run. Still, FTA President Eva Ruiz said, "We do feel we're going to be able to be financially (competitive)."

Four trustee seats are up in the November general election -- Cal Johnson in Area 1, Valerie Davis in Area 3, Christopher De La Cerda in Area 4 and Michelle Asadoorian in Area 7.

With no races in 2013, the union spent the year restocking its coffers.

It raised more than $90,000 and spent around $17,000. Its cash on hand went from $136,393 on Jan. 1, 2013 to $210,695 on Dec. 31, 2013.
