Gas leak forces closures in downtown Fresno

A gas leak has forced the closure of the intersection at G Street and Divisidero near downtown Fresno on Thursday, March 6, 2014.

Two state parole offices and an Internal Revenue Service office were cleared Thursday morning after a worker punctured a gas line in downtown Fresno.

No one was injured when an employee of a contractor punctured the 4-inch line on G Street near El Dorado Avenue about 10:30 a.m.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. spokesman Denny Boyles said the contractor did the right thing by contacting the energy company before digging. Unfortunately, the worker began digging toward the line using power tools instead of finding it first with a hand shovel, Boyles said.

Officials ordered everyone out of the parole offices and the IRS workers left voluntarily, officials said. An estimated 100 workers were affected.

Traffic detours were set up at El Dorado and H Street and at G and Stanislaus streets while repairs were made.
