HONOLULU — The Coast Guard is searching through a storm for a man who is sailing alone from Hawaii to San Francisco.
A friend notified the Coast Guard Thursday that Rimas Meleshyus sent a text message via satellite that said, "I lost my life raft, in danger now."
He left Hilo on Feb. 9 aboard a 24-foot sailboat named Pier Pressure.
The Coast Guard says there's a big storm with gale-force winds and 20-foot waves in the area where the boat was last known to be.
The Coast Guard diverted an aircraft from a training mission to fly to the vessel's last known position, nearly 1,000 miles northeast of the main Hawaiian islands. Vessels and aircraft in the area have been asked to help search.
