One man is dead and another man in critical condition after a shooting Thursday afternoon in southwest Fresno, police said.
Officers responding to the scene about 3:30 p.m. found the dead man inside a parked car and the wounded man on the street next to the car on Lily Avenue south of Church Avenue, police Lt. Herman Silva said.
Police said they believe the men who were shot were followed by several people in another vehicle, described as a gray or dark-colored van, into the neighborhood.
Silva said the men who were shot and the people in the van exchanged heavy gunfire, hitting several houses and cars. No one else in the neighborhood was injured.
Witnesses told officers that the men who were shot, who appear to be in their 20s or 30s, do not live in the area.
Police said they do not know the motive for the shooting but said it was not a random act.
"It appears that the victims were the intended target," Silva said.
Officers were still looking for the suspects.
Lt. Mark Salazar said the shooting is gang-related. No other information about the people involved in the gunfight was immediately available.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call detective Andre Benson at (559) 621-2442.
