A man who asked Wednesday evening to use the bathroom in an an elderly couple's Madera County home allegedly swiped their prescription medicine, said Erica Stuart, spokeswoman for the Madera County Sheriff's Office.
In response to the alleged theft at Wildwood Mobile Home Park, north of Woodward Park, Sheriff John Anderson issued a "stranger danger" alert -- cautioning citizens about opening their doors to strangers.
The man who entered the couple's home called himself "Steve" and was described as a white man in his late teens or early 20s with a slim build and short dark hair, Stuart said. He was wearing a short-sleeved, light-colored shirt and blue jeans.
Witnesses say an older model white pickup, with a white sticker on the driver's side windshield, was parked in front of the couple's home when the crime occurred.
Anyone with information is urged to call either the Madera County Sheriff's Office at (559) 675-7770 or Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-STOP.
"Never let a stranger into your home, even to use your bathroom or phone," Anderson said. "Whatever reason they may use to get in, do not open your door. If the stranger does not go away, call 911."
