Miguel Arias files to run for Area 5 State Center college trustee

Posted by John Ellis on February 25, 2014

Fresno Unified staffer Miguel Arias has filed paperwork to run for the Area 5 seat on the State Center Community College District board. The current trustee in the central Fresno district is Dorothy Smith.

Arias, 35, filed a candidate intention statement and formed a campaign committee earlier this month. He is the first State Center candidate to declare an intention to run for the board.

The election is in November.

Currently, Arias is executive director of community and family services at Fresno Unified. But he has a history in local politics. He worked as a district representative and legislative assistant to former Rep. Cal Dooley, served as a Mendota Unified trustee and was chief of staff to Fresno City Council Member Blong Xiong.

Smith — who was first elected to the board in 1981 — was unopposed when she last faced reelection in 2010.
