New memorial in Minkler honors officers slain in 2010 shootout

Law enforcement officers, family and friends gathered Tuesday in Minkler for the dedication of a memorial for Reedley police Officer Javier Bejar and Fresno County sheriff's Deputy Joel Wahlenmaier, who were killed in a shootout Feb. 25, 2010.

Attendees included Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims and Bev Wahlenmaier, the deputy's widow.

The memorial was the result of a Girl Scout Gold Project by Bryn Elise Cloud, 17, a member of Sanger Troop 497.

Four years ago, investigators from the sheriff's office and Cal Fire were attempting to serve a search warrant at a mobile home when the occupant, Rick Liles, opened fire, killing Wahlenmaier and wounding another deputy. In the shootout that followed, Bejar was mortally wounded.

After a seven-hour standoff, Liles, 51, was found dead inside the home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
