Clovis North High School's African-American Student Union will host an African-American Student Leadership Conference on Tuesday with keynote speaker Manny Scott.

Scott was part of a group of Long Beach high school students in the 1990s whose story was the basis for the 2007 movie, "Freedom Writers," that tells their story of development through writing.

Today, Scott is a motivational speaker who talks about the difficulties he faced as a child and the obstacles he overcame to reach his goals.

Student unions from Clovis Unified, Fresno Unified, Central High School, Washington Union High and Hanford West High are expected to attend the conference. According to organizers, the conference is meant to educate, inspire and encourage students to achieve academic excellence.
