Prep highlights for 2/22

BASEBALL

Aaron Gutierrez and Drew Borchardt combined for a no-hitter in Buchanan's 11-0 victory over Mt. Whitney at the Coca-Cola Classic. The Bears (4-0) were ranked No. 2 in The Bee's preseason top 10. Jacob Gatewood hit a walk-off single in the ninth to score McCarthy Tatum and give section preseason No. 2-ranked Clovis a 1-0 win over El Diamante. Gatewood, who was named to the preseason MaxPreps All-America team and is ranked No. 9 in the nation by Perfect Game, went a combined 4 for 6 Saturday with a double, a run and an RBI. The Cougars also beat Redwood 3-0.

Moises Contreras had 10 strikeouts on the mound, hit a triple and scored three times to help McLane defeat Tranquillity 11-0 in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader. Contreras went 2 for 2 with another triple and three runs scored in the Highlanders' 11-2 victory in the second game.

Nathan McGragh hit a two-run homer and Austin Crow drove in three runs to lift preseason No. 4 Clovis East over Edison 13-12 at the Coca-Cola Classic. The Tigers' Tyler Turney hit a two-run home run, and Chris Galarza went 3 for 3 with a double and three runs scored.

SOFTBALL

Sunnyside's Alex Snyder pitched back-to-back wins for the Wildcats, who defeated Fowler 8-7 and 7-6 in a nonleague doubleheader. Amanda Jimenez went 2 for 5 with a double and a triple for the Redcats.
