Special Olympians have a ball during tournament at Fresno's Hoover High

Seventeen teams from Fresno County middle schools and high schools competed Friday during the Special Olympics Northern California Fresno Basketball Competition at Hoover High.

Athletes from Hoover's varsity boys and girls basketball teams helped run the tournament, dozens more Hoover students served in other support roles and the Hoover cheerleaders helped kick off the day with opening ceremonies.

Hoover has hosted Special Olympics sports since 1990.

"This is more than sports competition, " said Michele Carmichael, a Special Olympics volunteer, "It's training for life."
