An apparent love quarrel at a motel across from the Save Mart Center in central Fresno turned violent Wednesday when the man shot his girlfriend and then killed himself, police said.
Police were called to the University Inn in the 2600 block of East Shaw Avenue about 5:19 p.m. after the 40-year-old woman called the motel's front desk to report that she had been shot, Lt. Joe Gomez said.
Police found the door to her room locked from the inside, and they had to kick it down to get inside. That's where they found the woman, conscious and breathing with a gunshot wound to the upper torso. Her boyfriend, a 55-year-old Fresno man, was dead of a gunshot wound to the torso.
The woman was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where she was reported in critical condition.
Police believe the woman may have called the motel's front desk, rather than 911, because she spoke Spanish and knew the motel clerk also spoke Spanish.
The identities of the woman and her boyfriend were not available Wednesday evening.
