Prep highlights for 2/18: Clovis West, Fresno win playoff openers

BOYS SOCCER

Defending Central Section Division I champion and ninth-seeded Clovis West got a goal from Christian Tucker off a long throw-in by Johney Nakamura that flicked off the head of Nick Marrone in the 82nd minute that sent the Golden Eagles over No. 8 Liberty-Bakersfield 1-0 in the opening round of the playoffs. No. 5 Bullard beat No. 12 Centennial 2-0 in D-I behind goals from Christian Cline and Jonathon Navarro. Adrian Gonzalez scored off an assist by Robert Cervantes in the 50th minute as No. 11 Clovis upset No. 6 Madera 2-1.

Ruben Monsivais scored in the 12th minute to lead No. 6 Fresno past No. 11 Mt. Whitney 1-0 in D-III.

Calistro Santiago and Felix Vasquez provided the goals as No. 5 Kerman downed No. 12 Hanford West 2-0 in D-IV.

Angel Lamas, a senior striker, scored both of Avenal's goals in overtime — the winner with a minute left — as the third-seeded Buccaneers defeated No. 6 Tranquillity 3-2 in D-VI.

GIRLS SOCCER

Serena Salinas scored twice as No. 2 Kingsburg beat No. 15 Rosamond 6-0 in D-IV.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Murshid Randle and Nate Amundsen scored 25 and 20 points, and top-ranked Central closed with a 24-13 fourth-quarter rush to win 72-62 at Clovis North and clinch at least a tie for the Tri-River Athletic Conference title. The Grizzlies lead No. 3 Clovis East by one game entering a home game Friday against the Grizzlies to close the regular season. Central received an assist from No. 4 Clovis West, which had Jakari McClain make 11 of 12 free throws, including 6 of 6 in the fourth quarter, and scored 16 points in all in a 66-63 homecourt win over Clovis East. The Golden Eagles, who relinquished all of a 15-point lead in the second half, also had Colin DeLaere score 16 points and freshman Adrian Antunez 14. The Timberwolves, who beat Clovis West 78-53 in the TRAC's first round, received 14 points from Isaac Acevedo, 12 from Cole Morgan and 11 from Dylan Eamigh, who had a steal but missed a 3-pointer with a second left.

Kurtis McCoy had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Fresno State commit Bryson Williams added 14 points and 16 rebounds as Roosevelt beat Reedley 74-54 and set up a showdown Thursday against Fresno for the North Yosemite League title.

Bullard will host Edison on Thursday in a battle for the County/Metro Athletic title after the Knights (9-0) got 15 points each from Austin Armstead and Marquis Macumba in a 75-50 win over Madera. The Tigers (8-1) beat Memorial 77-49 behind Daylon Potts' 24 points.

Genesis Cuevas' rebound and putback with 3.2 seconds lifted Sanger over Madera South 48-47 in the CMAC.

R.J. Horn, a Clovis North transfer declared eligible last week, had 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals as Immanuel beat Dinuba 66-48 in a showdown for first in the Central Sequoia League.

Fresno Christian pulled into a tie with Caruthers for first place in the West Sequoia League, getting 23 points from Brian Scott in a 75-68 defeat of the Blue Raiders.
