Mother, 4 children killed in fiery Riverdale crash identified

The Fresno BeeFebruary 17, 2014

The victims of the fiery crash that killed five people south of Riverdale Saturday were identified Monday by the Fresno County Coroner's Office.

They are the mother, Esmeralda Saucedo, 29, and her children: Jada, 6; Nikko, 4; Isaac, 2; and Breanna, 1.

A Riverdale clerk had identified the mother on Sunday as Esmeralda Tafoya -- the name the mother listed on her Facebook page.

Saucedo was driving a Ford Expedition SUV south on Marks Avenue when a woman driving west on Excelsior Avenue did not stop at a stop sign and smashed into Saucedo's car.

The collision knocked the SUV into a nearby yard and it burst into flames with the family trapped inside. Saucedo's husband, who was following in another vehicle, desperately tried to rescue them, the CHP and witnesses said. The driver of the other car was hospitalized with major injuries.
