Taylor Ward delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the 13th and Will Munro completed five innings of three-hit relief by escaping a jam in the bottom half Saturday as visiting Fresno State won a second straight overtime game to open the new season, beating UC Irvine 8-7.
The teams complete the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Munro, a junior right-hander from San Marcos, gave up a leadoff double to Chris Rabago in the 13th before recording three consecutive outs -- the last a groundout to third baseman Chris Mariscal with a runner on third.
Munro, the sixth Bulldogs pitcher, gave up one run, struck out four and walked one.
Taylor Tempel, a junior outfielder from Clovis, opened the 13th with a double to left-center on a 1-2 count after going 0 for 6. Jordan Luplow sacrificed him to second before Ward's one-out single to center.
Fresno State took a 7-6 lead in the 12th on a leadoff double by Kevin Viers -- the sophomore's fourth hit -- and Brody Russell's single to left.
But the Anteaters of the Big West tied it on a walk, single and Jonathan Herkins' RBI single. Munro then fanned two with runners on first and second.
Fresno State -- a 2-0 winner in 10 innings Friday -- plays its home opener at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday against Grand Canyon.
The Bulldogs will remain at Beiden Field to play Sacramento State at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday and Nevada for a weekend three-game series to begin Mountain West Conference play.
