Clovis North High's girls soccer team landed the top seed for the Central Section Division I playoffs, with two-time defending champ Buchanan given the No. 2 spot Saturday by a section committee that set brackets across six boys and girls divisions.
The Tri-River Athletic Conference swept the top three slots in both D-I seedings, with Central also landing a No. 3 in the girls and a No. 1 in a boys bracket that has Clovis North No. 2 and Buchanan at 3.
Other top seeds were awarded to El Diamante (D-II), Selma (III), Lindsay (IV), Orosi, (V) and Farmersville (VI) in the boys, and Frontier (II), Central Valley Christian (III), Bakersfield Christian (IV), Sierra (V) and Sierra Pacific (VI) in the girls.
Defending champions are Clovis West (D-I), Golden Valley (II), Roosevelt (III), Delano (IV), Orosi (V) and Farmersville (VI) in the boys, and Buchanan, Garces (II), Highland (III), Caruthers (IV), Lindsay (V) and McFarland (VI) in the girls.
First-round matches will be played Tuesday in the boys brackets and Wednesday in the girls with at least the No. 1 seeds, and generally more depending on the bracket, receiving byes. Championships will be played Feb. 28 or March 1 at the sites of the highest remaining seeds.
Clovis North's girls (16-4-1, 8-2), D-III champions in 2010, are seeking their first D-I title in their second season in the division. They were favored to receive top billing after edging Buchanan (16-4-2, 7-2-1) by a half game for the TRAC crown. But the Bears defeated the Broncos 3-1 on Friday, building yet more momentum after winning seven of the past eight D-I titles.
Girls opening D-I matches will send No. 9 Tulare to No. 8 Clovis West, No. 11 Clovis to No. 6 Centennial and No. 10 Clovis East to No. 7 Stockdale.
In D-I boys, No. 9 Clovis West will go to No. 8 Liberty-Bakersfield, No. 12 Centennial to No. 5 Bullard, No. 13 Clovis East to No. 4 Bakersfield, No. 11 Clovis to No. 6 Madera and No. 10 Stockdale to No. 7 West.
