It's early, so the Fresno State softball team has time to fix things.
But it certainly looks like there's plenty to mend, at least defensively, after one weekend of games.
Fresno State (3-2) is averaging nearly two errors a game after making nine in its first five games.
In the past 10 years, the Bulldogs just once have averaged more than one error per game — 1.02 in 2011. Last season, Fresno State finished at 0.87.
The Bulldogs will have their chances this weekend to straighten things out as, beginning today, they host the six-team Fresno State Kick-off tournament and play at Bulldog Diamond for the first time this season.
Whenever things went wrong last season, the Bulldogs almost always found their way at home. They finished 18-3 at Bulldog Diamond.
Fresno State surely will have to find similar success at home if they are to contend for a Mountain West Conference title this year.
And it starts on defense.
Fresno State's pitchers all have ERAs under 2.00, but have been hurt by eight unearned runs among 21 total scored by the opposition.
Senior Brooke Ortiz made the switch from second to play shortstop for the first time since high school and as can be expected has had some trouble. Her three errors lead the team.
But the Bulldogs also have gotten errors from players heavy on experience at their positions on the field.
Senior first baseman Stesha Brazil, a three-year starter, has two errors. Junior center fielder Brenna Moss has one.
Newcomers Kierra Willis and Liza Liddell also have an error each. Pitcher Taylor Langdon has the other.
The shoddy defense has offset the fact that Fresno State's staff is holding batters to a .209 average early on, this despite playing three opponents that made last year's NCAA tournament.
