The city of Fresno has killed downtown with parking meters! With all of the discussion about reopening the Fulton Mall, there never is a discussion about the effect parking meters have had on business in the downtown area. The Fulton Mall can be reopened to vehicle traffic, but it will remain abandoned because people do not want to pay to park. This is also why the baseball park has low attendance.
I live about equal driving distance from Fresno and Madera, but I drive to downtown Madera rather than to downtown Fresno because in Madera there is two hours' free parking. In Fresno, I would have to start paying right away. Why would a person drive to downtown Fresno to hassle the parking meter, when it is more convenient to drive to north Fresno or another city's downtown?
Parking meters should be eliminated in downtown Fresno, and the city should work on providing free public parking. Then people will be drawn downtown, businesses will thrive and there will be a revitalization.
