A day after scoring 17 runs in two games, the Fresno State softball team was silenced 7-0 Sunday afternoon by host and nationally ranked No. 7 Arizona State in the finale of the season-opening Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
Michelle Solomon and Stesha Brazil each got two-out singles in the third and sixth innings, respectively, but the offense left the two runners stranded both times and six runners were left on base overall.
Starter Jill Compton (2-1) got the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits through the first two frames.
Arizona State's Dallas Escobedo (3-0) struck out 10, walked two and gave up two hits in her second shutout of the season.
The Sun Devils (5-0) handed the Bulldogs (3-2) their first loss of the season by more than one run and it was the second defeat against a Pac-12 opponent. Fresno State was edged by No. 8 Oregon 9-8 in eight innings to start the tournament.
The Bulldogs return to Fresno as they host the Fresno State Kick-Off starting at 4:15 p.m. Friday against Sacramento State.
