Brenna Moss set the table for a pair of Fresno State softball victories Saturday, going a combined 4 for 6 with five runs as the Bulldogs improved to 3-1 at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The junior center fielder and leadoff hitter was 2 for 4 with a steal, run and RBI as Fresno State beat Appalachian State 11-3 in six innings during its first game Saturday. She followed that with a 2-for-2, four-run performance in an 8-1 victory over UC Riverside.
Stesha Brazil had two-run single in the first, a run-scoring triple in the second and a sacrifice fly in the sixth against Appalachian State (0-4). Hannah Harris (1-0) allowed two earned runs on five hits over three innings for the win, while Taylor Langdon pitched three scoreless, one-hit innings to earn her first save.
Michelle Soloman did the damage against UC Riverside (0-2) with an RBI triple in the first, a run-scoring single in the fifth and a two-run double in the seventh.
That would be more than enough support for Jill Compton, who pitched a three-hitter while allowing three hits and two walks. Compton (2-0) struck out four.
Taylor Wright (Buchanan High/Sequoias) drove in the Highlanders' lone run with a double in the bottom of the first. The junior third baseman is 4 for 7 with three RBIs in two games, with UC Riverside losing earlier Saturday to New Mexico 11-10.
Fresno State closes tournament play at 11:30 a.m. Sunday against No. 7-ranked and tournament host Arizona State.
