Thumbs up, thumbs down

February 7, 2014

Thumbs down to the Sierra Foothills Public Utility District for being several years late on providing required financial paperwork to state Controller John Chiang. The district, which was formed in 1998 to provide infrastructure for a planned community around Riverbend Golf Club, is flat broke. It should get the paperwork to Chiang's office, forge an agreement with another agency to service the area and dissolve.

Thumbs up to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo and the Clovis Rodeo Association for receiving Destination Champions awards from the Fresno/Clovis Convention & Visitors Bureau. A thumbs up to bureau interns Erica Heinisch, Dushica Cosic, Nathan Talbot, Melanie Daniels, Christopher Costello, Danny Griffith and Scott Van Meter, all from Fresno State. They were recognized as Destination Builders. And a thumbs up to Jim McKelvey, who has provided the bureau with pro bono legal counsel for many years.

Thumbs up to the city of Clovis for being recognized as No. 1 among the "Best Cities for Young Families in California.", a consumer advocacy website, based its rankings on the quality of a city's public schools, home affordability and economy.

Thumbs up to The Foundation for Riverdale Schools for awarding nearly $30,000 in grants to support the efforts of Riverdale Unified. The grants will be for classroom technology and new ways to approach teaching.
