Ex-Buchanan High star Alex Fertig sank two free throws with 24 seconds left Thursday night to seal Cal State Monterey Bay's 60-57 victory over NCAA Division II No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona, ending the Broncos' 13-game winning streak.
Fertig, a sophomore, finished with a team-leading 16 points, six rebounds and four assists as the Otters (7-11, 5-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association) beat a nationally ranked opponent for the second time in program history.
"We were so well prepared," Fertig said. "It was harder in practice this week then it was in the game. We know we're good. It's just a matter of putting all of the pieces together."
The Broncos (15-4, 13-2) pulled within 58–55 and saw the door to move even closer open wide after Fertig went to the line and missed the front end of a 1–and–1 opportunity with 38 seconds to play. Pomona hit two free throws of its own to make it a 1–point game with 30 seconds left.
Cal State Monterey Bay inbounded and Fertig was fouled again. This time, the 57% free-throw shooter made both.
"My free throws haven't been too hot this year as you've said before," Fertig told Otters radio play–by–play man Rob Ponce on the postgame show. "It feels good to step up. I missed the first time but I knew I couldn't let that happen again."
