Fresno Pacific's baseball team will open the home portion of its schedule in the same way for a second straight season, hosting Cal State Stanislaus in a nonconference doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Friday.
The Sunbirds are 1-1 after a season-opening doubleheader split this past weekend at NCAA Division II No. 8 Chico State.
It will be the season opener, meanwhile, for the Warriors, who will turn around and host Fresno Pacific in a Saturday twinbill that will include the inaugural night game at newly lit Warrior Field in Turlock.
Last year, the teams split four games — each sweeping a doubleheader on the road.
Fresno Pacific's 1-2 returning starting pitching punch of seniors J.D. Salles and Wilson Ashford had mixed success on opening day against Chico State.
Salles, a right-hander, allowed three runs, just two of them earned, but also 10 hits in six innings. Ashford, a left-hander, allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, in four innings.
Other early notables:
• Senior outfielder Kaohu Gaspar, an All-PacWest selection last season, couldn't have started much hotter. He went 5 for 6 in the two games.
• Junior third baseman Michael Hostetler, who starred for two years at Reedley College after prepping at Hanford High, is off to a 3-for-7 start at the NCAA D-II level.
• Stanislaus' roster includes ex-Edison High standout Skippy Ferreria, a junior infielder/outfielder. He hit .292 in 137 at-bats over 45 games, including 36 starts, a year ago.
• Warriors senior outfielder Brent Hall (Golden West High/Sequoias) is a transfer from Hofstra.
