A man was arrested Wednesday with drugs in his possession and for allegedly running a chop shop out of a garage, Fresno police Sgt. Tim Tietjen said.
About 7 p.m., police made a traffic stop of a 62-year-old Englishman when they discovered he had marijuana for sale, Tietjen said. When they went to search his home in the 5400 block of East Balch Avenue, they found a chop shop in a garage he rented from the owner.
Tietjen said the suspect told the owner he was working on a car and paid $200 for a month of privacy in the garage. Police found a car almost stripped bare in the garage.
The man was from England and had little criminal history, but there was evidence he had a methamphetamine problem, Tietjen said. Police found three grams of meth and they believe he is closely involved with a Bulldog gang car theft crew.
Tietjen said that crews now use the garages of abandoned homes or rent a garage to set up a chop shop, rather than use commercial space. He said residents can contact police if they hear machinery coming from an abandoned house.
