The district attorneys of Kings and Tulare counties have filed misdemeanor criminal complaints against Jeffrey A. Prins, owner of The Recycle Depot, Inc., charging that he broke state hazardous waste laws at his recycling businesses.
When recycling major appliances, Prins did not remove hazardous materials requiring special handling, the state Department of Toxic Substances Control said.
Prins operates The Recycle Depot in Visalia and two in Hanford. In Kings County, Prins is also charged with improper handling of hazardous wastes.
Prins could not be reached for comment.
Recyclers must remove mercury, refrigerants and used oil from large appliances when disposing of them, the DTSC said. The department's Office of Criminal Investigations and Enforcement and Emergency Response Division investigated.
