Thumbs up, thumbs down

FresnoJanuary 31, 2014

Thumbs up to the Fresno County Board of Supervisors for deciding to make an offer on a vacant building east of Fashion Fair mall. If the county's effort is successful, the building will become the new headquarters of the county library system. It also would have a training center and house the new mobile library program. Most of all, this move would free up space for public use at the main library in downtown Fresno. As Supervisor Henry Perea said, "Considering that downtown is the flagship of our library system, adding a whole floor for additional public services is the big win."

Thumbs up to Fresno's Mofo Party Band for supplying their hometown — and the world — with 25 years of hard-charging rock 'n' blues. Brothers John and Bill Clifton are outstanding musicians and entertainers, but most of all, they are good people. The band is putting on a 25th anniversary show tonight at Fulton 55. The band is again touring Europe this year and will release its eighth CD.

Thumbs up to the Gar and Esther Tootelian Charitable Foundation and Gar Tootelian Inc. for sponsoring the new Agriculture Zone at Chukchansi Park. The zone, which will be completed by 2014 Opening Day, will promote the Fresno Grizzlies Community Fund's Farm Grown program that supports central San Joaquin Valley agriculture, education, sustainability, and health and wellness. The sponsorship agreement runs through the 2017 baseball season.
