Individuals and families can get free tax return help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in Fresno County. The service is sponsored by the United Way of Fresno County and George Runner, one of five members of the state Board of Equalization. Runner's district includes the central San Joaquin Valley.
Taxpayers should bring identification including Social Security cards, wage and earning statements, interest and dividend statements from banks, bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit and a copy of last year's federal and state returns if available.
To find a VITA location, visit the United Way's website at www.unitedwayfresno.org or Fresno County residents can call 211 for information.
