Preseason JC All-American Ryne Dean drove in two runs and Northern California top-ranked Fresno City College beat SoCal No. 3 Riverside 5-1 in a nonconference baseball season opener Tuesday night at John Euless Ballpark.
Starting pitcher and All-American Dominic Topoozian struck out six in 52/3 innings in Fresno City's third straight Opening Day win. Three relievers combined to strike out another five.
Justin Flores went 2 for 3 with two doubles; Daniel Gardner also was 2 for 3.
The Tigers committed five errors.
• Reedley fell 4-1 at NorCal No. 14 Cabrillo, as preseason All-America right-hander Nat Hamby — a UC Davis signee — struck out nine in 71/3 innings and combined with Eddy Puga on a two-hitter for the Seahawks, who won their fourth straight opener. Nick Pate doubled and eventually scored the lone run for the Tigers in the fifth.
Rams softball team posts opening rout
Fresno City freshman Selena Ruiz was 4 for 4 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and six RBIs and also pitched a complete game in the state No. 10-ranked Rams' 17-0 rout over Bakersfield.
The Rams (1-0), opening this season with co-head coaches in Sandi Auble and Haley Janzer, erupted for 14 runs in the fifth, highlighted by grand slams by Ruiz and Naomi Gomes.
