Valley education leader Peter Mehas, who died in September, will be honored Wednesday by the California State University Board of Trustees with a trustee emeritus award.

Mehas, a four-term Fresno County schools superintendent and longtime educator, was a board trustee at the time of his death.

CSU spokesman Michael Uhlenkamp said it's common for a deceased trustee, or one who leaves the position, to get the trustee emeritus honor.

Uhlenkamp said Mehas' spot on the board has not been filled. He said there are currently at least four other open trustee seats.
