A 23-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot early Sunday in a parking lot near in downtown Fresno, police said.
Officers found the man lying on his back in the parking lot about 2:40 a.m. on the west side of Van Ness Avenue directly across from the Mezcal Bar near Tuolumne Street.
He had been shot several times in the upper body and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, said Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez. The victim was described as a Varrio Eastside Reedley Norteno gang member who lives in Fresno.
"Although his wounds are very serious they do not appear to be life-threatening," Gomez said.
After the shooting, police said the suspect got into the back of a light colored SUV and fled east on Tuolumne Street.
