Jackson Carbajal's layup with 2:49 left gave the Sunbirds an 80-79 lead as they won their second straight and improved to 7-12 overall and 2-9 in the conference.
Derek Owens's 22 points led the Vulcans (3-14, 0-11).
Patrice Saindon scored 16 points in 16 second-half minutes as the Sunbirds women blew past Hawaii Hilo 66-58 for their third straight win. The Sunbirds (6-11, 6-5) trailed by three at halftime, but hit 14 of 29 shots while enjoying a 40-29 edge on the Vulcans (6-9, 5-6) in the second half. Jenay Herring led Fresno Pacific with 20 points.
Rams men roll on road
Fresno City College's state top-ranked men's basketball team defeated host Columbia 72-56 — the Rams' 19th straight win this season and 44th consecutive victory in the Central Valley Conference.
The Rams are 22-1 overall this season, 5-0 in the CVC.
COS wins on late shot
Corissa Turley's spin-move jumper in the paint with 3 seconds left gave Sequoias a 57-55 overtime win over Merced in a CVC women's basketball game.
The state No. 8 Giants (17-5, 4-1) had a chance in regulation but Turley missed two free throws with 10 seconds left. Trinity Washington missed at the buzzer for the No. 16 Blue Devils (14-8, 3-2).
Sunbirds swim by Soka
Matlyn Morris won four events in Fresno Pacific's 155-80 victory over Soka in a women's swimming dual meet at Sunnyside High.
Morris won the 100 free (55.26 seconds), 200 free (2:00.78), 500 free (5:23.56) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:50.84).
The Sunbirds men beat Soka, an NAIA university from Aliso Viejo, 145-83 behind double individual winners Ian Roos (1,000 free, 9:59.05; 500 free, 4:50.16), Wesley Coles (200 free, 1:43.25; 100 fly, 51.90) and Patric Ridell (100 breast, 59.21; 200 breast, 2:11.01).
Bulldogs wrap up at Air Force track meet
Meagan McKee finished third in the shot put with a heave of 46 feet, 10 inches as Fresno State wrapped up competition at the Air Force Academy Invitational track and field meet.
Sarah Hill won the women's high jump with a mark of 5-41/2 to highlight Fresno Pacific's performances at the Azusa Pacific indoor all-comers meet.
Tennis: Fresno State suffered a 4-0 loss to No. 13 Clemson on ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Clemson, S.C. The Bulldogs face No. 27 Purdue today.
Water polo: Fresno Pacific lost 18-3 to NCAA Division I No. 12 San Jose State and 6-5 to Whittier at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational. The Sunbirds' Emily Marr scored in each match.
