In his Jan. 18 letter, Carl Pederson informed readers that unknown taggers had defaced the newly built pedestrian tunnel on Shepherd Avenue.
I share Mr. Pederson's frustration. Fortunately, Fresno citizens have the ability to fight back. The Fresno Police Department's Graffiti Abatement Team (GAT) was created to quickly respond and remove graffiti. Over the past eight years, GAT has proven to be one of the most efficient graffiti removal teams in the nation. For example, GAT received notification late Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 15, that vandals had sprayed graffiti on the Shepherd underpass. The graffiti was removed the next morning by 7:30 a.m.
Most graffiti is removed within 24 hours of citizen notification, seven days a week. In many instances, if the call is received early enough in the morning, team members can respond the same day. This process has removed tens of millions of square feet of graffiti from public places in our community.
Please help send a message to gangs and vandals that graffiti will not be tolerated in Fresno. For service, call 621-CITY (2489).
