Fresno Pacific has its first PacWest Conference men's basketball win of the season, snapping a 10-game losing streak with a 72-66 win over Hawaii Pacific on Thursday night.
Jackson Carbajal had 17 points to lead the Sunbirds (6-12, 1-9). Phil Jackson had three thunderous first-half dunks in his first major action since returning from injury for the Sunbirds (6-12, 1-9), who forced 21 turnovers by the Sea Warriors (11-5, 6-4).
The Sunbirds women knocked off one of the top teams in the PacWest and surpassed their season win total for 2012-13. The Sunbirds (5-11, 5-5) held Hawaii Pacific to 31% shooting in the first half and 42% for the game in a 67-63 win. Charde Stevens scored 25 points against the Sea Warriors (11-5, 7-3).
Fresno Pacific's baseball team was picked to finish in a tie for third in the PacWest, and outfielder Kaohu Gaspar and pitcher J.D. Salles were named to the preseason all-conference team in a coaches poll.
Fresno boxer heads for U.S. training camp
Fresno's Isidro Ochoa leaves Monday for USA Boxing's training center in Colorado Springs, where he will spend three months preparing for at least two international events.
Ochoa, 16, who represents Fresno PAL, won the 132-pound youth male (17-18) division at the Junior and Youth Open in Reno on Jan. 11 to earn his trip.
He will fight in the International Youth Tournament (Feb. 20-23 in Anapa, Russia) and Youth Worlds (April 10-20 in Bulgaria).
