The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., is seeking photographs of all 58,286 men and women whose names are on "The Wall."
The "Wall of Faces" on the memorial's website displays some of the images already collected -- high school yearbook photos, men wearing jungle fatigues or in front of aircraft, formal portraits from basic training, family photos.
The portraits will one day be displayed at the Education Center, a museum near the memorial slated to open by decade's end.
"We'll put a face with the name when people visit the Education Center," said Jan Scruggs, president and founder of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which built "The Wall."
"Seeing the photos and hearing the music playing will put the visitor in a certain emotional state," he said.
To date, about 33,000 photographs have been collected.
The central San Joaquin Valley lost 296 men, and photos of many of them are still being sought: 72 from Fresno County; 33 from Tulare County; 23 from Merced County; 14 from Kings County; and seven from Madera County. There are none missing from Mariposa County.
Joe Mohnike of Visalia, whose cousin Phillip S. Mohnike of Visalia died when the helicopter he was piloting was shot down, said he has a basic training photo that he'll gladly submit.
Mohnike said his cousin "was just about ready to go back stateside and get back in the real world" when he was killed.
The list of missing photos includes the name of Lance Cpl. William "Bill" Yohn of Fresno, who voluntarily joined the Marines after high school and was killed in action in 1969 in Quang Tri province. He was 19.
His sister Mary Yohn of Fresno said she has a photo -- "a picture of him in front of a barracks in Hawaii" -- and plans to post a digitized version to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund website.
Yohn still grieves the loss of her younger brother. When a replica of "The Wall" came to Eugene, Ore., where she once lived, "I sat in the rain and talked to my brother for a long time," she said.
Many photos of California war dead have been submitted to the website thanks to Janna Hoehn, a florist in Kihei on the Hawaiian island of Maui, who has made it her personal mission to collect as many as possible.
Hoehn visited the memorial in Washington five years ago, got a rubbing of a name -- she chose one at random -- and later found a photo to go with it. After reading an article in her local newspaper about the fund's "call for photos," she submitted the photo -- and launched a crusade.
She tracked down photographs of all 42 Maui County soldiers whose names are on the memorial, then set her sights on tracking down photos of California's war dead by contacting newspapers and asking them to run stories about the search for photos.
" 'A man hasn't died as long as he's remembered,' " Hoehn said, citing what she said is a Native American prayer. "Every time I get a photo, I can't tell you what it does to me."
She's discovered that whoever keeps the yearbooks at a high school can be a great help.
Hoehn is one of dozens of grassroots volunteers across the country trying to find photographs, Scruggs said.
Digitized photos can be submitted to the website directly, but Hoehn asks that anyone submitting photos from California email them to her so she can submit them and can keep track of her progress.
Her email address is: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sometimes it's a matter of reaching out to family members who have a photo.
Patricia Stever Blattler of Visalia, director of the Tulare County Farm Bureau, said the photo project is an opportunity for her to honor a distant relative who died in the war before she was born.
When she visited the memorial in Washington, D.C., Blattler got an etching depicting the name of Chief Warrant Officer James M. Stever of Visalia, a helicopter pilot who died after a crash landing.
Stever said she had been unaware of the photo project, and would reach out to her family members to locate one.
