An Asian Boyz gang member was arrested on suspicion of shooting at two police officers in central Fresno Thursday, police announced Tuesday.
Joseph Chanla, 18, was taken into custody Saturday after Street Violence Section detectives received information that he was hiding in an apartment at the 500 block of North Orchard Avenue.
Detectives searched the apartment and found a loaded and stolen handgun in an inoperable TV.
Chanla confessed to the shooting, Lt. Mark Salazar said.
The two police officers who were shot at on Fresno Street near Grant Avenue were in central Fresno to arrest a man wanted for drug possession. That's when Chanla shot at them after another Asian Boyz gang member, Wilson Khounvixay, 29, of Fresno told him to, Salazar said. Neither officer was injured.
Khounvixay was taken into custody that day while Chanla ran away.
Police said that Chanla was arrested on two counts of attempted murder, weapons violations, assault with a deadly weapon and gang enhancements. Khounvixay is on probation for evading officers, weapon violations and resisting arrest.
The Fresno County District Attorney's Office filed the charges on Khounvixay and Chanla Tuesday.
