A Buddhist monk who was killed crossing a street Jan. 16 in east-central Fresno has been identified as 67-year-old Bounchanh Khaosaath.

Khaosaath was crossing East Dakota Avenue east of Maple Avenue headed north shortly before 6 p.m. when a westbound truck struck him, Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez said.

When police arrived, Khaosaath had major injuries and was unconscious. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center where he later died.

The driver of the truck was at the scene when police arrived. Drugs or alcohol did not appear to play a role in the fatal accident, Gomez said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
