High school highlights for Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014:
BOYS BASKETBALL: SUPER SATURDAY SHOWCASE
** Murshid Randle scored 23 points as top-ranked Central (17-3), a night after defeating three-year reigning Central Section Division I champion Bullard 70-66 at Fresno City College, shifted to Edison High and beat Sheldon-Sacramento 78-59 to close the seven-game Super Saturday showcase.
** Braxton Hicks made one of his four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Edison closed with a 15-4 rush to rally past Mission Oak 61-59. Hicks, with 14 points, led 10 Tigers scorers. Mission Oak, a 2013 D-III runner-up playing for nearly a month now without Bee All-Star point guard Blake Shannon (high ankle sprain), received 24 points from Tanner Murphy.
** Senior center C.J. Johnson's 32 points powered Lemoore to a 71-69 double-OT victory against Hoover. Rakim Murphy and Allen Clem had 21 and 18 for the Patriots.
** Tyler Burch scored 34 points to power Westminster of the Southern Section to a 71-52 victory over Selma. Anoop Grewal countered with 27 points for the Bears.
** Roosevelt (15-4), continuing to establish itself in a loaded D-III, built a six-point lead after three quarters and held on to beat Redwood 67-61 behind the scoring of Darrian Epperson (16), Bryson Williams (15), Kurtis McCoy (14) and Brian King (12). The Rangers made it close behind 15 and 14 points from Riley Gerberick and Josh Carr.
** Michael and Kenneth Mendrin combined for 37 points to lead Kerman to a 74-65 win over Delano.
** Freshman Darrin Person scored 19 points and Immanuel outscored Sanger 13-4 in the fourth quarter for a 49-37 decision. Adam Martinez led the Apaches with 15 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL: I HAVE A DREAM
** Washington got the best of Coalinga this time during the seven-game I Have A Dream Classic at Sierra Pacific in a rematch of sorts of last year's D-IV quarterfinal. Behind William Blue's game-high 22 points, the Panthers defeated the Horned Toads, who, as a No. 8 seed, shocked top-seeded Washington 54-52 last February. Anthony Zataray led Coalinga this time with 16 points.
** Brian Scott led all scorers with 21 points to lead Fresno Christian to a 67-50 victory against Strathmore. John Hipsland had 17 points for the Spartans.
** Nico Portillo scored 15 points as Corcoran topped Paramount 59-45.
