Former Fresno City Council Member Larry Westerlund has been named the city of Fresno's economic development director.

Mayor Ashley Swearengin said Westerlund brings business investment and redevelopment experience "which is essential for marketing our city as a prime location for new business development and expansion opportunities for existing area businesses."

City Manager Bruce Rudd said he's confident Westerlund will help the administration "find creative approaches to stimulate economic expansion in our city."

Westerlund said he is passionate about "helping businesses do what they do best -- make products, provide services and create jobs."

Westerlund represented District 4 for two terms. He was termed out in January 2013.
