Edison, down 11-0 to begin the game, received a 3-pointer from senior guard Sergio Rocha with 9.3 seconds remaining to win 70-68 at Washington in a nonleague duel of west-side rivals. The Panthers, 0-8 against Edison since last beating the Tigers 70-67 in December 2008, had taken a 68-66 lead behind Isaac Sears, a senior guard, who made two layups after his own steals in addition to two technical free throws. The Tigers then made a technical free throw before a Washington miss set the stage for the winner by Rocha, who returned to Edison this season after moving to Colorado for his junior year. Sam Watkins and Braxton Hicks scored 13 and 12 points for the Division I Tigers. Shakor Major countered with 22 for the D-IV Panthers.
Hanford, ranked No. 1 in the Central Section, balanced its scoring behind Brooke Johnson (19), Madison Barnes (18) and freshman Janelle Sumilong (16) to rout El Diamante 71-25 for its 87th consecutive West Yosemite League win.
Dashayla Johnson, a Bee All-Star guard headed to Cal State Fullerton, delivered a school-record 42 points as Tulare Western defeated Mt. Whitney 62-41 in a nonleague game. Johnson made three 3-pointers and 8-of-10 free throws.
Sanger again got the best of Edison in a rematch of 2013 section quarterfinalists, as Adina Mercado's goal stood up in a 1-0 win to open County/Metro Athletic Conference play. The Apaches won 3-2 in overtime in last season's section D-II tournament en route to a runner-up finish to Garces.
