A 60-year-old Los Altos man died and his 58-year-old female passenger sustained major injuries Tuesday when their Chevrolet SUV collided with a big rig driven by a Fresno man near Buttonwillow, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The CHP said big rig driver Javier Amaro, 41, of Fresno was eastbound on Copus Road east of Schallock Road about 2 p.m. when the Los Altos man, who was westbound on Copus, drifted into the truck's path and collided with the big rig. The impact threw the driver from the SUV and pinned him under the vehicle. He died at the scene.
His passenger was taken to a hospital, as was Amaro, who had moderate injuries.
