One person is dead after a fire broke out Monday night at the Parkland Hotel west of Highway 99 in Fresno, officials said.
The fire broke out about 10 p.m. in one ground-floor guest room at the hotel, at 3093 Parkway Drive, said Fresno Fire Department Battalion Chief Don Bier. The fire destroyed the room's interior and caused some damage to the exterior of the hotel.
Bier said fire officials don't yet know what caused the fire, and crews don't know who the victim was or whether that person was a man or a woman.
Rooms above where the fire occurred were occupied, but the occupants got out without injury, Bier said.
The hotel had fire sprinklers near the front entrance, Bier said, but not in the residential area. There was no evidence of a working smoke alarm in the room, he said.
The fire is under investigation. No other details were immediately available.
