A man shot by Visalia police last week was a felon wanted on suspicion of burglary and domestic violence, Sgt. Paul Esquibel said Wednesday.
Peter Paul Rodriguez, 33, of Visalia, is getting medical care at the Tulare County Jail and is in stable condition, he said.
About 4:20 p.m. Friday, police got a tip that Rodriguez was in a west Visalia neighborhood. He ran when officers spotted him, turned and began to raise a handgun as police yelled at him to drop it, Esquibel said.
He ignored police, who opened fire because officers were "in fear for their safety and the safety of others," Esquibel said.
Rodriguez faces charges of obstructing an officer, being a felon in possession of a handgun and having illegal drugs for sale. The domestic violence and burglary cases have been submitted to the Tulare County District Attorney's Office.
