Trail Mix 1/9: Winter Trout Derby at Visalia's Plaza Park

The annual Winter Trout Derby at Plaza Park pond in Visalia is set for 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday.

The derby will feature two groupings -- Division I for ages 7 and under and Division II for 8- to 15-year-olds.

Participants must register to fish in the contest that awards prizes to the top three total stringer weights in each category. Pre-registration costs $4 per participant and is $5 the day of. Plaza Park pond will close at noon Friday in preparation for the derby, park spokesman Freddy Arias said.

Woodward Park to host 5K dance party

The Electro Dash 5K has opened registration for runners and EDM (electronic dance music) fans.

The "5K dance party," as its dubbed on its website, is scheduled for March 14 at Woodward Park and features a course filled with neon lights, lasers and screen projections in addition to groovy electro beats. Three waves are listed for the 5K with the first starting at 7 p.m. The following two waves will start in increments of 20 minutes.

Participants will get a T-shirt, race number, glow glasses and a glow bracelet in the race packet. The event features two DJs, one at mid-course and one at the finish line where the course turns into an after-event party. Registration starts at $40.


REI ski and snowboard waxing class

When: 4-8 p.m. Sunday

Where: REI Fresno, 7810 N. Blackstone Ave.

Learn how to effectively maintain your own equipment all winter long and properly store your equipment for the offseason. Attendees will have access to REI's waxing benches, irons, wax and brushes as shop technicians talk and walk guests through the best practices in waxing equipment. Bring your own skis or board to wax.

<SC120,116>On Tuesday, REI will host a an avalanche awareness workshop from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop teaches backcountry travelers where and why avalanches occur and a basic approach to managing the risk while out in the wilderness. Attendees will also learn about local avalanche bulletins, weather reports and how to recognize avalanche danger.


Member day on the McKenzie Preserve

Members of the Sierra Foothill Conservancy will be able to enjoy an open day on the preserve.

The gates will open at 9 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. Memberships are available online for $50 ($20 for students).
