A 12-year-old Porterville boy was airlifted to a Fresno hospital Saturday afternoon with life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a vehicle while playing catch, Porterville police said.

Officers were called to the 200 block of North Roche Street at 2:16 p.m. for a traffic collision involving a pedestrian.

An investigation revealed that a 44-year-old man was driving south on Roche Street from Thurman Avenue when the boy ran into the road while playing catch, police said. The driver was unable to stop in time and struck the boy.

The driver was uninjured. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision, police said.
