The California State Parks is sponsoring free guided walks at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park on New Year's Day as part of America's State Parks' First Day Hikes initiatives in all 50 states.
Allensworth is the only state park in the central San Joaquin Valley hosting free guided hikes, with hikes starting at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. from the visitors center. The walks are easy, about 3/4-miles long and roughly two hours.
The park has a rich history dating to the early 1900s when it became the first community in California founded, financed and governed by African-Americans under the leadership of Colonel Allen Allensworth.
