Safe driving is the holiday wish for the California Highway Patrol and officers will implement their annual Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period on Tuesday.
The enforcement period will put CHP officers on heightened alert starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday for unsafe drivers who speed or fail to use their seat belts and impaired drivers.
CHP said during last year's 4 1/2-day-long enforcement period, 39 people died in traffic collisions and more than half of the victims were not wearing seat belts.
During that period, there were also 1,170 DUI arrests.
